Self Care/Love Saturday

What does being selfish mean to you?

adjective (of a person, action, or motive) lacking consideration for others; concerned chiefly with one's own personal profit or pleasure.

Sounds pretty horrible right?

At the start of 2020, I decided that I would consciously and intentionally become more selfish and start to take more time to focus on myself. I mean this should be pretty standard right? WRONG! I always associated being selfish with something negative and guilty, and in turn could do just about anything without thought for others, but when it came down to doing the smallest thing for myself, I would find any excuse to not do it.

So present day, it seems like the world is in the middle of a huge necessary transition where people are aware of the injustices that have been around since the beginning of time, and let us not forget the whole pandemic that has been looming for months. It is more important than ever to take time out to be selfish, unplug from reality, and enjoy the moments in life that we so often take for granted. Do you wake up in the morning and thank your higher power whether it be "God","the universe","your ancestors", all the above, or none of the above, for just being able to see another day? When was the last time you just simply expressed gratitude?

So on this day that I have designated Self Care/Love Saturday. Take a moment from the craziness of your life and be grateful. Sit still. Take a few deep breaths and just BE. Be conscious and intentional in how you treat yourself especially in these uncertain times. Do something you enjoy, eat your favorite guilty meal or snack, read a book, take a bath, whatever makes YOU feel good. In case you need more ideas on how to be selfish check my list below. Granted, due to the times some of these may not be applicable now, but definitely are doable in the future.

  • Mani/pedi

  • Skype with loved one

  • Create a bucket list

  • Talk with a counselor

  • Hug someone

  • Kiss someone

  • Take a bath

  • Volunteer

  • Go to a nice restaurant

  • Watch a sunrise/sunset

  • Vision Board

  • Write a letter (not an email) to someone you love

  • Nap

  • Laugh

  • Turn off your phone

  • Make a playlist of your favorite music

Remember to stay consistent with the act of loving yourself. Take time each day to appreciate yourself, but also remember being selfish is not always a bad thing. Self care is not selfish, it is a necessity. Hell, even if it is selfish so what!

Check out some of my pictures that make me happy, and let me know what you did for yourself this week.

Talk soon.
